A 50-photo photography quest

What the student did

Banks, 14, completed a self-directed photography project by capturing and curating fifty landscape and architectural photographs. Across five milestones, Banks documented natural formations, historic stonework, bodies of water, and coastal cliffs.

The work required managing composition, framing, and changing natural lighting conditions in various outdoor environments. Banks adjusted angles and vantage points to capture expansive valleys, mountain paths, caves, and coastal headlands before uploading the complete collection to Optio for evaluation.

What it counted for

This photography quest earned 550 XP toward a high school Fine Arts credit. It is one project among several that Banks completed toward a full credit. The collection of 50 original images was the direct evidence of artistic technique and visual composition that a licensed teacher reviewed to award the XP.

Optio students earn XP for finished work instead of letter grades. An Optio teacher reviews the evidence against the task's criteria and awards the XP. 2,000 XP is one high school credit on an Optio Academy transcript.

Questions about Optio

Can personal photography projects count toward high school credit?

Yes. Students at Optio can turn independent creative work, such as building a photography portfolio, into academic credit in subjects like Fine Arts. The student documents their work through direct evidence, such as photo uploads, which demonstrate artistic skills.

How does a student submit self-directed projects for teacher review?

Students organize their projects into clear tasks and upload their evidence directly to the school platform. A licensed teacher reviews the submitted files against defined criteria to confirm that the learning goals have been met.

How do XP and credits appear on an official transcript?

Optio converts completed tasks into XP, where 2,000 XP equals one full high school credit. Once a licensed teacher reviews and approves the evidence, the awarded credit appears under the designated subject on a WASC-accredited transcript.

Stories are written from real submissions on Optio. Student details are anonymized unless a family has recorded consent, and evidence is shown as submitted, minus anything a family did not agree to share. Published September 18, 2026, updated September 18, 2026.
